West African Drumming
Years ago Baba Olatunji inspired me to get into West African drumming and since then I have studied African music pretty much non-stop ever since. My study of traditional Malinke/Maninka music has taken me to Guinea in West Africa, where I studied with djembe legend Mamady Keita. I regularly play for dance classes in Seattle, including One World Dance and Wassa Dance.
Community
I have always been proactive about maintaining my personal and professional networks. Since 1998 I have organized and hosted the Fremont Noodle House Group, regular gatherings of independent and independent-minded professionals.
In the early years of the internet, I was in San Francisco working for a new-media development studio where did a lot of research and work on virtual community. The upshot of that experience was a strong craving for the real thing, so I packed up and left the unfamiliar Bay Area to return to Seattle. I've been home for over ten years now and have never looked back.
Volunteer Work
For the past fifteen years I have regularly volunteered my time for Seattle arts events like Bumbershoot, the Fremont Solstice Parade, and the World Rhythm Festival. I served for two years as a board member for the Seattle World Percussion Society, the organization that stages the World Rhythm Festival. When I lived in the Bay Area, I served as a juror for the National Educational Media Network. And when I lived in New York City I did volunteer work in homeless shelters.
Seattle, WA
Having strayed from home as an Air Force brat and then as an itinerant book publisher, I am now committed to remaining in the city where I was born, though I still like traveling occasionally to New York, San Francisco, or any place warm and/or sunny during the winter months.
Juggling
Juggling describes both my lifestyle and an activity I used to spend way too much time on.
Secret Page for RPPC and the "H" Crowd
You know who you are. Maybe a Radcliffe Publishing Course alumn, perhaps a later addition to the mailing list for that weird newsletter I used to publish. There's a page about that publication hidden on this site. Enter its title or that word that starts with "H" in the search box below and you should see a link to it. If that doesn't work, drop me a note and I'll send you a link to the page.
